Sleep my darling, close your eyes Dream your dreams of wondrous skies Mommy will hold you and sing the song Where you belong Sleep my darling, close your eyes Dream your dreams of wondrous skies Dream of spirits like birds that fly Way up high Sleep my darling, close your eyes Mommy will sing ’til the sun will rise Guiding stars, all through the night Shining bright Sleep, sleep tight

about

In 2016, Vivian Melde, Nava Sarracino and Christel Veraart joined forces to present The Child Behind the Eyes, by Israeli playwright Nava Semel. This monodrama was commissioned in 1986 by actress Assi Eshed, whose son was born with Down syndrome. Originally written in Hebrew, this play was translated in 10 languages and performed worldwide. The Pacific Northwest and Alaskan performances took place in Anchorage, Seward, and at the Victoria Fringe Festival (Canada). This production was directed by Vivian Melde, produced by RKP, and the original music was composed by Christel Veraart.

After successful performances in 2016 in Alaska and Canada, and more performances in 2018 in The Netherlands, the monodrama The Child behind the Eyes (Nava Semel), for which I wrote the music, will continue to the 2019 Halifax Fringe Festival in Nova Scotia.

Always the wanderer, I read the script for The Child Behind The Eyes while in Mexico where, from my remote and solar powered studio, I wrote the first draft of what would become the title song for the Alaskan/Canadian production of Nava Semel’s play. I first released this title song in Yiddish as Viglid. Subsequently playwright Nava Semel adapted the lyrics into Hebrew, continuing the multilingual tradition characteristic of her work, which lead to Shir Eres. For good measure, and since the Alaskan/Canadian production is performed in English, I produced a third version, entitled Lullaby.

Review by playwright Nava Semel: "I was very moved by your lullaby. Your music is enchanting and it brought back memories from my grandparents with whom I spoke Yiddish as a child. Although Hebrew is now our language in Israel, the world of the Jewish past still beats within my soul. I'm glad not everything is lost. Thank you for reviving this legacy through your music."
